About Dr. Tang

My enthusiasm for craftsmanship began during my childhood in San Francisco as the son of a carpenter. A degree in Engineering at UC Berkeley furthered my passion for problem solving while a degree in Philosophy piqued my fascination with the human brain and mind. This latter interest led me to medical school at the University of Southern California where I graduated with highest distinction and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, equivalent to Phi Beta Kappa for medicine.

After medical school, I honed my skills as a surgical intern within the high volume setting of the Los County Hospital. My neurosurgical training continued at the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard and Emory University where I spent an extra year specializing in spine surgery. During this time in academia, I authored over 100 publications and presentations while receiving 20 awards including national awards for spine, cerebrovascular and socioeconomic research.

Most will look to my board certification, good grades and high test scores as labels of a solid education. However, my most important education has been the challenge of applying theory to practice throughout nearly 6000 surgeries. Refining techniques, adapting to my strengths and the uniqueness of each patient, I continue to strive to improve. My career has been marked by a reputation in the community as conservative surgeon who reserves surgery as a last resort. I have received annual awards such "Top Doctor" by Castle and Connolly or "Best Doctors" for 10 years in a row.

Dr. Tang has authored over one hundred presentations and publications and received over twenty awards including:

  • The American Association of Neurological Surgeons/Congress of Neurosurgeons Mayfield Award for Spine Research
